Sheffield United provided the only major shock of the FA Cup third round with the Sky Bet League 1 side winning 3-0 at Premier League QPR.
Marc McNulty, the Blades' leading scorer this season, opened the scoring before Jamal Campbell-Ryce pounced from close range after QPR failed to clear a corner.
Campbell-Ryce then grabbed his second late on to compound the embarrassment for Harry Redknapp's side.
Alan Pardew's reign at Crystal Palace began in comfortable style against Vanarama Conference side Dover Athletic.
Scott Dann scored twice - his first ever brace - before Dwight Gayle and Kevin Doyle rounded off a 4-0 win at the Crabble.
It was a case of what might have been in the 1500 GMT kick-offs as the four Premier League clubs in action all saw off threats of a giant-killing.
Manchester City came back from a goal down at the break to beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1.
Atdhe Nuhiu had put the Owls 1-0 up at the Etihad before James Milner scored twice in reply on his 29th birthday - including the winner in stoppage time - to secure the win.
There was disappointment for Wrexham at Stoke after Mark Carrington's header had given the Conference side the lead with 17 minutes remaining.
That served only to sting Stoke into action and Marko Arnautovic plus two late Stephen Ireland goals made it 3-1 and ended hopes of another remarkable chapter in Wrexham's FA Cup history.
Sky Bet Championship side Ipswich did force a 1-1 draw at Premier League high-flyers Southampton.
Veteran midfielder Darren Ambrose struck first for Ipswich only for Morgan Schneiderlin to grab the equaliser.

A stunning finish from Ander Herrera helped Manchester United edge past a resolute Yeovil and into the fourth round.
An out-of-sorts United side, which included captain Wayne Rooney, David De Gea and Radamel Falcao, toiled for over an hour against their struggling hosts until a piece of individual brilliance set them on their way to a 2-0 win.
Herrera marked his FA Cup debut with a thumping 64th-minute volley that left Yeovil goalkeeper Jed Steer clutching at thin air.
Angel Di Maria made sure of the win with a very late second goal.
Chelsea powered through as second-half goals from Willian, Loic Remy and Kurt Zouma completed a 3-0 victory over Watford.
The first half was goalless and, with the Sky Bet Championship visitors enjoying moments of promise, tension was beginning to build on a freezing afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
But the interval arrival of Willian and Diego Costa from the bench had the desired impact, with the Brazilian plundering the opener and the Spaniard involved in two of the three goals.
FA Cup holders Arsenal progressed in Sunday's final match with a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium over last season's beaten finalists Hull.
The Gunners took the lead on 20 minutes through a header from defender Per Mertsacker at a corner, before Chile forward Alexis Sanchez capped another man-of-the-match display with a fine curling effort on 82 minutes which ended any hopes of a late comeback from the Tigers.
