The Blues needed the help of an own goal to see off Skt Bet League 2 Shrewsbury 2-1, while the Reds had to wait until the 95th minute for Dejan Lovren's goal to see them past 10-man Swansea by the same scoreline.
Marvin Emnes gave the Swans a 65th-minute lead but Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers tasted victory over his former club thanks to Mario Balotelli's equaliser and then, after Federico Fernandez's stoppage-time sending-off for a challenge on Philippe Coutinho, Lovren's header in the dying seconds - his first goal for the Merseysiders.
Captain for the night Didier Drogba was the key figure in Chelsea's win, starting when he scored a well-taken opener early in the second half.
Andy Mangan equalised just over a minute after coming on as a substitute but Willian's cross, intended for Drogba, was turned in by unfortunate Shrews defender Jermaine Grandison in the 81st minute.
