Manager Jose Mourinho has virtually sealed the £32million signing of Atletico’s leading scorer, Diego Costa.
And it would suit him if Lukaku agreed to travel in the opposite direction for a season’s loan in Spain’s La Liga.
So far there have been no takers for the 21-year-old striker on a permanent basis, after Chelsea demanded £25m for the player who has spent the last two seasons in successful spells out on loan at West Brom and Everton which produced a total of 32 goals.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez, who is contemplating a move to sign one of his former Wigan players, veteran attacking midfielder Shaun Maloney, 31, is not interested in Lukaku at Chelsea’s asking price.
That poses a problem for Mourinho, who is reluctant to keep Lukaku in his squad next season following a fall-out with the player and his advisor.
Ideally, Mourinho he does not want to loan him out to another Premier League club, to save any embarrassment should the Belgian end up scoring masses of goals.
So a switch to Spain and champions Atletico would suit Chelsea and help smooth negotiations to bring in Costa.
