WENGER CLOSES UP ON 40M POUNDS DOUBLE SWOOP

Mathieu Debuchy

Arsene Wenger is closing in on a £40m double swoop for Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy and Barcelona attacker Alexis Sanchez with the French defender passing his medical on Monday, according to reports today.

The boss has been on the look-out for a replacement for Bacary Sagna after he joinedManchester City on a free transfer last month and Debuchy has emerged as his key target in recent weeks.

After much speculation over the weekend, theDaily Mail are one of several newspapers who are claiming today that the 28-year-old was in London on Monday where he completed his medical after we agreed a deal with Newcastle.
However, media outlets seem split on what the exact fee will be. The Mail believe we’ll be paying £11m but Goal and the Guardian feel we’ll only be paying around £8m up front with further payments based on additional add ons.
Either way, Debuchy is a solid signing and a player that will be able to come straight in an make the right-back slot his own. He has plenty of Premier League experience which I feel was vital when trying to find a replacement for Sagna, so we’ve done well to snap up his compatriot as a very reasonable price.
The signing is expected to be officially announced over the coming days and it could be revealed as a part of a stunning £40m double swoop with reports also suggesting that we are on the verge of completing a £32m deal for Alexis Sanchez.
As we reported last night, the Liverpool Echo were one of several outlets who claim that Liverpool have been forced to admit defeat in their pursuit of Sanchez after the players agents informed the club he had opted to join Arsenal.
Goal suggest that personal terms have already been agreed in principal with the 25-year-old so it appears we’re closing in on two new signings. The likelihood is that the Sanchez deal will depend on when Barcelona are able to complete their deal for Luis Suarez, but hopefully everything can be resolved by the end of the week.
While Debuchy is a solid purchase, understandably fans are excited by the prospect of Sanchez joining us. The Chilean will be a superb addition and bring some much-needed pace, power and goals to our attack next season, so lets hope there are no last minute glitches and the attacker is an Arsenal player soon.
